SESSION V: Destigmatizing and Treating Health Anxiety in OCD

Obsessive-Compulsive-Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition characterized by unwanted intrusive thoughts and all-consuming repetitive behaviors that lead to extreme suffering. While the content or theme of one’s OCD can vary widely, one of the most misunderstood presentations of the disorder is health anxiety. The confusion stems from the fundamental misunderstanding that health anxiety OCD refers to one who is chronically anxious about their health not about whether they are actually sick or not. Underlying many health-related obsessions is an overinflated sense of responsibility to monitor and maintain one's health which leads to time-consuming rituals. When treating health-themed obsessions and compulsions it is imperative to identify the core fears and faulty beliefs that drive compulsive behaviors so they can be effectively targeted in treatment. This lecture will feature the various ways health-themed obsessions present and how to tailor effective treatment plans using evidence-based treatment for OCD.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After this lecture, registrants will be able to:

  1. Recognize forms of health anxiety in OCD.
  2. Identify compulsions in health anxiety OCD.
  3. Explain guidelines for constructing ERP interventions for health anxiety in OCD.

SESSION VI: Managing Peripartum OCD

Perinatal OCD affects 1 in every 50 during pregnancy and every 3 in 100 women in the year after giving birth. When women are at the perinatal period, they are at an increased risk for onset or exacerbation of OCD. Their obsessions and/or compulsions may be perinatal-specific, This workshop will discuss this very important time and ways clinicians can support women.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After this lecture, registrants will be able to:

  1. Recognize common OCD symptom presentations during pregnancy/postpartum
  2. Outline factors to be considered in treating individuals with peripartum OCD
  3. Discuss the risks and benefits of pharmacological treatment options for peripartum OCD

This activity is intended for physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, counselors, and other mental health professionals.
