The interface of religion, spirituality, and psychiatric practice has long been of interest to the ethical psychiatrist with strong proponents and opponents on both sides. Although many clinicians appreciate the importance of incorporating religion and spirituality into psychiatric care, they wonder how to do so and if it is ethical.
This presentation will review current literature and explore the intersection of the tenets of religion and spirituality with the biopsychosocial model of modern psychiatric treatment, psychotherapy, and psychiatric research. It will also provide guidance for the ethical clinician in relation to the religious and spiritual aspects of patient care.
