Suicide remains a leading cause of death in the United States, and firearms account for a disproportionate share of suicide mortality because they are highly lethal and often immediately accessible during short periods of acute risk. This presentation will review the epidemiology of firearm suicide, explain why access to lethal means is a clinically important and modifiable suicide risk factor, and describe practical tools clinicians can use to reduce risk, including lethal means counseling, safe storage planning, and Extreme Risk Protection Orders. Attendees will leave with a clearer framework for asking about firearm access, counseling patients and families in a nonjudgmental way, and identifying situations in which an ERPO may be appropriate.
