Older adults develop sleep disorders for many reasons as they age and they experience changes in their sleep patterns. Mental and physical health ailments, e.g. depression, cognitive deficits, social isolation, and chronic diseases, will interfere with the quality of sleep. Studies show that sleep deprivation will increase the difficulty of performing cognitive tasks, e.g. working memory, problem-solving, and alertness. Additionally, sleep deprivation has negative effects on the cardiovascular system, it is shown to increase the risk for chronic disease and premature death. Interventions for sleep, i.e. behavior therapy and lifestyle modifications, are needed to mitigate these negative effects towards improving their quality of life.
