Exposure and response prevention (ERP) has been the gold standard treatment for sufferers of OCD for many years. Despite that and the implementation of acceptance principles and targeting the specific common content areas, some patients are unable to achieve satisfactory remission rates. This presentation will highlight some of the recurring pitfalls encountered in treatment (e.g., not addressing underlying core fears; over-focusing on the obsessional content) and will offer suggested remedies that should help both clinicians and patients improve the delivery, implementation and effectiveness of ERP and thus reduce lifetime relapse rates. This presentation will provide the information and tools to flexibly tailor ERP to the needs and learning style and pace of individual OCD sufferers without abandoning its guiding principles and evidence basis.
