On Demand Grand Rounds: The Neuroscience of Psychotherapy

This presentation was originally reviewed on March 5, 2024, and broadcast live online on March 6, 2024, from 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM ET.

The views and opinions expressed by this presenter in this lecture are their own, and do not represent the views of Sheppard Pratt.

Over the past few decades, advances in the neurosciences have led to exciting opportunities to correlate subjective symptom reports with objective measures using imaging and neuroendocrine markers.  It is well established that psychotherapy has biological effects on reshaping maladaptive neuronal responses, leading to more flexible activation patterns.  This occurs in tandem with clinical response to successful psychological treatments, as patients may soften their rigid cognitions regarding self and others, allowing for more measured approaches to their conflicts.  It can be difficult to assimilate the expansive literature on this topic, making it hard to know what information is relevant and useful for practitioners.  This presentation will distill how psychotherapy can lead to neurobiological change, linking its effect with the maladaptive activation patterns seen in common psychiatric conditions.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, counselors and other mental health professionals.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, attendees will be able to:

  1. Explain how early life adversity can affect individuals on neurobiological levels.
  2. Discuss how successful psychotherapy can reshape maladaptive neuronal activation patterns, correlating with clinical improvement.
  3. Recognize the synergy between psychotherapy and psychopharmacologic agents, including drugs such as hallucinogens.

Sheppard Pratt regularly hosts renowned speakers from across the country at our headquarters in Towson. We provide educational opportunities on subjects including psychiatric disorders, issues of behavioral health, systems-based change, mental and somatic co-morbidities, psychiatric effects on health and health outcomes, advances in neurobiology, and clinical developments in concepts underlying drug treatment of psychiatric disorders.
