Neuropsychiatric consequences that follow a traumatic brain injury (TBI) can be debilitating from behavioral, cognitive, and emotional standpoints. Individuals with TBI can also suffer from impulsivity, leading to problems like loss of jobs and troubles in their interpersonal relationships. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a psychotherapy originally used to treat individuals with borderline personality disorder and chronic suicidality. In general, research has supported that standard DBT is effective for people experiencing chronic emotion dysregulation and complex-difficult to treat mental health problems. Given the strong focus in DBT on teaching and generalizing new skill as well as the importance placed on providers balancing acceptance and change, an adapted DBT treatment presents itself as an appropriate therapeutic approach for individuals with TBI. This presentation will discuss an adapted DBT-informed psychotherapy, strongly focused on patient skills acquisition, improves the way patients with TBI function and cope with their lives, specifically in their ability to cope with stress, emotion regulation capabilities, connectedness with their social supports, and overall satisfaction in life.
Target Audience
