About the speakers

Dr. Shumilina is a dedicated and compassionate mental health professional, with expertise in both clinical social work and psychology. As a Co-Director of Aspire Psychotherapy, Dr. Shumilina provides outpatient psychotherapy services to individuals across New York State, helping to improve the mental health and well-being of her patients. Holding both an LCSW from Columbia University and a PsyD from LIU Post, she brings a unique and comprehensive approach to her work. She is particularly passionate about serving members of the LGBTQ and immigrant communities, and is committed to exploring the impact of societal issues such as power/privilege and -isms on mental health. In 2019, Dr. Shumilina served as the Co-Director of the PRIDE Healing Center at LIU Post University, where she provided low or no cost mental health services to the LGBTQ community. This ignited her commitment to improving patients’ experiences by enhancing therapists' skills and knowledge in working with LGBTQ population, as well as exploring the intersection of social work and psychology. Dr. Shumilina is a strong advocate for affirmative care in her clinical work and is committed to reducing health disparities experienced by the LGBTQ community.

Brie Scolaro, LMSW (they) is a queer identified licensed social worker and the Co-Director of Aspire Psychotherapy, which delivers outpatient psychotherapy to individuals across New York State. They are currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Social Welfare from The Graduate Center, CUNY, where they are focusing on advancing research in LGBTQ+ practice and policy issues and bridging the micro-macro divide. Brie received their Master of Science in Social Work from Columbia University and a Bachelor in Psychology from the University of Delaware. They believe that advocating for policy and societal  change is essential in addition to individual level work to alleviate the health disparities faced by LGBTQ+ clients.
