Burnout is a term we have all heard, used, and experienced. A less frequent concept is secondary traumatic stress or vicarious trauma, on the spectrum with burnout and compassion fatigue. This time, we focus on the clinicians, the providers, and not directly our patients. The goal of this presentation is to discuss what those are, how to identify them, recognize how they may play out in the legal arena, and how to address them when we fall anywhere on that spectrum.

This presentation will highlight suicide risk and prevention strategies as they relate to selected diverse cultures. Studies have shown a wide range of risk factors for suicide, that are different between cultures, understanding them can help clinicians with identifying the risks their patients are facing. In addition, and based on that, the effectiveness of intervention strategies for various ethnoracial or minority groups depends on which group the patient is from. As such, having a culturally sensitive discussion and being able to select the appropriate intervention or management method is vital in addressing suicide in diverse cultures.

Suicide is a leading cause of death among young people in the US and the rate of death by suicide in the overall US population has been increasing, unlike in most other places in the world. Suicide affects all age groups and ethnicities and is a source of pain and suffering. throughout our society. An understanding of strategies that can reduce suicide is essential in order to tackle this issue. The presentation will review the current evidence about suicide presentation strategies which have been shown to be effective. These include approaches at the societal level as well as those that may be implemented by individual clinicians.
