Emetophobia, a fear of vomiting, stands apart from most other mental health problems.  It is often challenging to determine whether it is the correct diagnosis relative to diagnostic alternatives (Social Anxiety, ARFID, Anorexia, ODD, PTSD). There is even some debate as to how it should be categorized as a disorder (a Simple Phobia, or a subset of OCD). And while it may seem at first glance to be a disorder which results in no more than inconvenience to those that suffer with it, in truth emetophobics may struggle with catastrophic quality of life issues related to all aspects of life and functioning.

This webinar focuses on the often-subtle symptom presentations of this disorder, and reviews the multiple cognitive behavioral interventions aimed at helping emetophobics overcome their anxieties and reclaim their lives. Very specific strategies in the form of video exposure, environmental exposure, behavioral exposure, and symptom cue exposure will be illustrated. Interventions to avoid in therapy and instructions to provide to significant others in the emetophobic’s life will be presented. Participants will come away with a better understanding of the disorder and its emotional sequela and will have a set of specific strategies to share with their clients in treatment.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, counselors, and other mental health professionals.
