On Demand OCD & Anxiety Lecture Series: Body Dysmorphic Disorder: What Clinicians Need to Know
This presentation was originally reviewed on October 5, 2022, and broadcast live online on October 7, 2022, from 2:45 PM –4:15 PM ET.
Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a common yet underrecognized disorder that may be unfamiliar to clinicians and which patients may be reluctant to reveal due to embarrassment and shame. BDD usually causes significant emotional distress, impairment in functioning, and poor quality of life, and it is associated with very high rates of suicidality. Despite its prevalence and severity, most patients do not receive adequate evidence-based treatment for BDD. Many patients instead seek and receive cosmetic treatment, which is usually ineffective and can even worsen BDD symptoms. This presentation will focus on BDD’s clinical features, how to diagnose BDD, and the two first-line evidence-based treatments for BDD, which are effective for a majority of patients: 1) certain medications, and 2) cognitive behavioral therapy that is tailored to BDD’s unique clinical features.
