The workshop will focus on the nature of not just right experiences, also known as incompleteness, the presentation of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Additionally, the emotion disgust will be described, and illustrated for its role in the onset and maintenance of specific forms of OCD. These two facets of OCD, while under investigated, are further described for their essential role in the disorder. The workshop will conclude with strategies for addressing each of these components of OCD.

This activity is intended for psychologists, social workers, counselors, and other mental health professionals.

Learning Objectives

After this lecture, registrants will be able to:

  1. Distinguish the sense of incompleteness in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) from harm avoidance and other traditional conceptualizations of the disorder.
  2. Identify facets of disgust, and how these may impact symptoms of OCD.
  3. Use the conceptualization for incompleteness and disgust in developing methods for exposure treatment for OCD.

About the speaker

Dean McKay, PhD, ABPP is Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Fordham University. He has published over 175 journal articles and book chapters, and edited or co-edited 16 books dealing with assessment and treatment of complex cases in children and adults, OCD, disgust in psychopathology, and research methodology. His research has also focused on mechanisms of information processing bias for anxiety states.
