On Demand OCD & Anxiety Lecture Series: Core Concepts in Diagnosing and Treating Obsessive Compulsive Disorder with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common, often debilitating, and chronic disorder with a reputation for being difficult to treat. This reputation, however, conflicts with evidence that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with an emphasis on exposure with response prevention (ERP) and related evidence-based approaches are effective. Lacking an understanding of some core concepts in assessing and treating the disorder can result in misdiagnosis and implementation of ineffective interventions. Furthermore, failure to identify less commonly understood symptoms as part of OCD can result in increasing shame and impairment in patients who were already apprehensive about seeking help. This lecture will be an introduction to conceptualizing care for OCD patients and demystify the disorder and its most effective treatment strategies.

About the speaker:
Jon Hershfield, MFT, is director of the Center for OCD and Anxiety at Sheppard Pratt and a specialist in the treatment of OCD and related disorders. He is the author of multiple books on OCD and its treatment, including When a Family Member Has OCD, Overcoming Harm OCD, and The OCD Workbook for Teens and co-author of Everyday Mindfulness for OCD and The Mindfulness Workbook for OCD. He is a regular presenter at conferences and webinars for The International OCD Foundation and the Anxiety and Depression Association of America.
