On Demand Professional Workshop: Working with Personality Dynamics in Short-Term Settings

An extensive empirical literature attests that personality factors (in both therapist and patient) account for the lion’s share of variance in psychotherapy outcome. Personality variables also affect whether patients cooperate with medication regimens. Although medical centers, counseling services, and clinics lack the resources to do long-term individual treatment of patients with personality disorders, clinicians in these settings can increase their effectiveness in reaching more limited goals by taking patients’ personality patterns (whether pathological or not) into account. This workshop will be oriented toward helping front-line clinicians improve their effectiveness by orienting treatment toward the individual personalities of their patients.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, counselors and other mental health professionals. 

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, attendees will be able to:

  1. Define personality differences in terms of relational themes, not simply traits
  2. Distinguish between anaclitic and introjective forms of depressive experience and mention one clinical implication for each subjective subtype
  3. Identify six qualities that have been empirically associated with successful psychotherapies

About the speaker

Nancy McWilliams is Visiting Professor Emerita at Rutgers Graduate School of Applied & Professional Psychology and has a private practice in Lambertville, NJ. She is author of four textbooks (on psychoanalytic diagnosis, case formulation, therapy, and supervision) and is co-editor of both editions of the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual. A former president of the Society for Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy of the American Psychological Association, she is a member of the Austen Riggs Center Board of Trustees. Her books are available in 20 languages and she has taught in 30 countries.
