How do we create spaces that go beyond DEI and focus on true belonging in our organizations and communities? This workshop explores the limitations of traditional DEI efforts and provides practical strategies for cultivating environments where individuals feel valued, heard, and empowered. through reflective exercises and actionable tools, participants will learn how to integrate belonging into their practice, policy-making, and client interactions. Participants will explore the key elements of belonging, identify barriers to inclusion, and learn actionable strategies to create a workplace culture that supports psychological safety, collaboration, and engagement. Attendees will leave with practical tools to cultivate a workplace where everyone can thrive.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for psychologists, social workers, counselors and other mental health professionals.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, attendees will be able to:
- Describe the core principles of belonging
- Articulate the differences between diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging concepts
- Identify at least 3 common structural, interpersonal, and/or cultural barriers that prevent full belonging in social work environments

About the speaker
Erica Tatum-Sheade is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Certified Daring Way Facilitator, Registered Play Therapist who utilizes Adlerian Play Therapy and the co-owner of Integrated Mental Health Associates a private practice located in Scottsdale, Arizona whose mission is to provide open, professional, and above all effective mental health services to those in need. Erica provides individual sessions to children, adolescents, and young adults specializing in Shame Resiliency, CBT, EMDR, and Play Therapy. In addition to individual sessions, Erica provides Daring Greatly and Rising Strong groups for women and she also created a group curriculum called G.E.M.S. ® (Girls Empowered, Motivated, and Strong), where she teaches concepts of confidence, empowerment, self-esteem, and authenticity to girls from elementary through high school. In addition to providing psychotherapy, Erica also provides training to other professionals and speaks regularly about mental health to the general public. Named one of the 2021 Women of Vision by the National Association for Women Business Owners-AZ (NAWBO), 2022 Social Worker of The Year by NASW-AZ, and one of the 2024 Phoenix Titan 100 award winners, and the first recipient of the Frances Young Trailblazer award from Scottsdale Leadership Erica is a strong advocate for children and families. Starting her career as a Senior Social Worker for the Salt River Indian Community before transitioning into private practice Erica continues to advocate for children and families as an Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for Maricopa County Superior and as an active member of organizations such as the National Coalition of 100 Black Women. Erica currently serves on several boards including Vice President of Black Therapists in Arizona, Immediate Past President of the Arizona Association for Play Therapy, Board Member for Kid in The Corner a suicide prevention nonprofit as well as Regional Co-Lead for Rocky Mountain Southwest States Daring Way Facilitators.
