The first annual Sheppard Pratt and OCD Mid-Atlantic Conference sponsored by Sheppard Pratt and OCD Mid-Atlantic (an affiliate of the International OCD Foundation) is a day of advanced continuing education and destigmatization about obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It features professional workshops from experts in the field on topics including pediatric OCD, Tourettic OCD, the use of technology in OCD treatment, and the history and evolution of OCD psychiatry.  The day concludes with a lived experience panel featuring individuals affected by OCD who will share about their journeys to manage the condition.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, counselors, and other mental health professionals. 

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, attendees will be able to:

  1. Describe the current best-practice evidence-based approach to the pharmacological and psychological treatment of OCD.
  2. Discuss the differences and similarities between tics and compulsions.
  3. Identify strategies for implementing exposure and response prevention (ERP) in the treatment of children with OCD.

From the Baltimore beltway, take exit 25, Charles Street.  Proceed south on Charles Street for approximately 2.5 miles.  The entrance to Sheppard Pratt will be on your left, just past the stone gatehouse.  You will be on Gatehouse Drive.  Take the first left onto Conference Center Drive.  Turn left to the parking area directly in front of the Conference Center.

Travel

To reach the Conference Center enter the campus from Charles Street using Gatehouse Drive.  Stay on Gatehouse Drive bearing left when it forks at Pratt Drive.  Continue a short distance and Conference Center Drive will be on your left.  Follow Conference Center Drive to the facility.  Park in front of the  building.

About the speakers

Dr. Charles Mansueto is founder and director of the Behavior Therapy Center of Greater Washington, a leading center for the treatment of obsessive-compulsive and related disorders. He has over 40 years of experience in the application of cognitive behavior therapy to a broad range of clinical problems.  Dr. Mansueto has written extensively and has presented nationally and internationally on OCD and related disorders.  He currently serves on the Scientific and Clinical Advisory Board of the International Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Foundation and is on the faculty of the IOCDF Behavior Therapy Training Institute. He is a member of the Executive Board of OCD Mid-Atlantic—an IOCDF affiliate and serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of the TLC Foundation for Body Focused Repetitive Behaviors, where he also heads the TLC Professional Training Institute.

Dr. Gryczkowski is a clinical psychologist and anxiety specialist with over 15 years of experience providing cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)/ERP for anxiety, OCD, and related conditions. She previously taught CBT as an adjunct professor in the clinical psychology doctoral program at George Mason University for several years, which included clinical supervision, and also served as Assistant Director of Clinical Training. She has taught and supervised CBT in a variety of other settings and also provides ERP case consultation. Dr. Gryczkowski earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at The University of Southern Mississippi. Specialty training in anxiety/OCD began in her pre-doctoral internship at Indiana University School of Medicine, followed by her 2-year post-doctoral fellowship at Mayo Clinic. She works with all ages and has worked in a variety of settings, including inpatient, residential, intensive outpatient, academic medical centers, and private practice. After spending many years working as an anxiety and OCD specialist at group practices, including Alvord, Baker & Associates most recently, Dr. Gryczkowski opened her own practice in 2022 – New Hope Anxiety & OCD Center. She also has a secondary specialty in behavioral parent training.

Peter W. Tuerk, Ph.D is a clinical psychologist and Professor at the University of Virginia, where he serves as Director of the Sheila Johnson Center for Clinical Services, a multidisciplinary outpatient behavioral health clinic. Dr. Tuerk specializes in evidence-based treatments for anxiety-spectrum disorders, related research and training, and the integration of technology into clinical care.  He conducts research and clinical trials focused on the augmentation of evidence-based treatments, serving as Principal Investigator on NIH, VA, and DoD research awards, integrating artificial intelligence, virtual reality, mobile health, crowd sourcing, and applied psychophysiology into clinical care settings. As a scientist-practitioner, Dr. Tuerk is active in direct clinical care and has authored 120 peer-reviewed publications, chapters, and commissioned government reports. He has served in lead roles for national and international clinical training and dissemination initiatives in the US, Australia, and Japan and for regional initiatives in 25 US states and territories.  He has been recognized with a number of awards, including VA’s highest career honor, the Olin E. Teague Award for Outstanding Career Achievement in the Rehabilitation of War-Injured Veterans, and Australia’s highest research distinction in 2025 for his collaboration on a national validation of a novel exposure therapy protocol.

Originally from New York, Dr. Bruce Hershfield did his psychiatric training at the University of North Carolina. He then moved to Maryland to work at Sheppard Pratt. After 6 years there he became Medical Director of the state’s Highland Psychiatric Unit, then Superintendent of Springfield Hospital Center. He began a part-time private practice in 1974 and expanded it to full-time in 1993.  He continues to see patients at his office, in the barn on the family farm in Sparks. He has also been on the part-time faculty at Johns Hopkins since 1981. He has been active in psychiatric organizations for many years, having served as president of the Maryland Psychiatric Society and the Southern Psychiatric Association and the Speaker of the Assembly of the American Psychiatric Association. He is currently the Editor of The Maryland Psychiatrist and Southlands, which is the newsletter of the Southern.
