Fifty Years of OCD Psychiatry: A Conversation with Bruce Hershfield, MD

This presentation was originally reviewed on  October 15, 2025, and in person and live streamed online on October 17, 2025, from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm ET.

The views and opinions expressed by this presenter in this lecture are their own, and do not represent the views of Sheppard Pratt.

For many years, psychiatrists have struggled with diagnosing and treating OCD effectively. These skills have evolved in the last 50 years, but problems remain. The diagnosis is often confused with features of other disorders that co-exist with it, like depression and panic disorder. Psychiatrists are often pressured to make diagnoses rapidly and to treat patients with "medication checks". They may be asked to coordinate their efforts with psychotherapists they don't know and who may not be aware of the techniques necessary to effectively treat it.

In this conversation, both effective treatments and some of the ones that have been tried in the past will be discussed, so clinicians can make better choices about how to help their patients.
