The Meyerhoff Lecture: Neurobiological Correlates of Psychoanalytic Object Relations Theory

May 14, 2020

The Meyerhoff Lecture: A special complimentary lecture hosted by Sheppard Pratt & University of Maryland

This presentation will be broadcast live online on May 14, 2020 from 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM.

Go to the Take Course tab above to learn how to participate.

Psychodynamic concepts require significant modifications in the light of present day knowledge of neurobiological developments.  This presentation will describe the neurobiological structures that constitute the basis of the development of internalized object relations, that is, dyadic units of self-representations and object representations linked by specific affect.  These dyadic units are considered the essential “building blocks” of psychic experiences, the concrete content of unconscious phantasy, and the structure elements of intrapsychic experience.  Self and object representations are cognitive cortical functions activated by affective systems originating in limbic structures.  This presentation will describe the corresponding integration of affective memory at conscious and unconscious levels.  The crystallization of conflicts between positive affective and negative affective internalized object relations will be outlined in the description of normal and pathological stages of psychic development.  Neurobiological development, in short, originates psychological structure that, in turn, will fundamentally affect the personality structure and pathology.
