Group interventions are widely used in acute care clinical mental health settings. This presentation will address how group therapists can create effective and meaningful therapy groups in settings that are challenging due to high patient acuity, short patient stays and inconsistent group attendance. Properly structured, groups in these settings can utilize interpersonal group therapy principles to enhance patient sense of connection, reduce anxiety and foster greater engagement with their treatment.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for psychologists, social workers, counselors, and other mental health professionals.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, attendees will be able to:
- Apply factors that contribute to enhanced group psychotherapist effectiveness.
- Operate group therapy for patients in high acuity, high turnover clinical settings.
- Define interpersonal learning therapeutic opportunities within the here and now of the group
- Discuss the principles of therapeutic metacommunication and processing within the therapeutic relationship
- Describe interventions that improve group therapy.
