Wednesday Lecture Series: What Every Psychiatric Clinician Should Know About Complicated Grief

Complicated Grief (CG) is a painful and debilitating condition associated with considerable morbidity and mortality. Without treatment, it can last for years, if not indefinitely. This condition is much more common than generally recognized, but often missed or misunderstood by even the most astute clinicians. A grief-focused psychotherapy named Complicated Grief Therapy (CGT) is an evidence-based intervention designed to promote adaptation to loss in individuals with Complicated Grief. This presentation will provide review the main features of uncomplicated and complicated grief, depict how to differentiate Complicated Grief from “typical” grief, and describe key principles and procedures of Complicated Grief Therapy. It also will review the use of antidepressant medication for this condition. At the end of the presentation, clinicians should be better armed to recognize Complicated Grief in their patients and know when to refer or initiate treatment.

This activity is intended for physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, counselors, therapists and other mental health professionals.

1. Define key characteristics of uncomplicated (acute and integrative) grief.
2. Describe features and consequences of complicated grief.
3. Recognize and explain key components and effectiveness of a treatment for complicated grief.

About this speaker:
Currently, Dr. Zisook is a Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry UC San Diego. He directs the UC San Diego Healer Education, Assessment and Referral (HEAR) program, dedicated to preventing/reducing nurse and physician mental health stigma, burnout, and suicide. He serves on the Scientific Review Board and Grant Review Committee of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), Scientific Advisory Board of the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA), Board of Directors of the American College of Psychiatry and the Board of Directors of the American Society of Clinical Pharmacology. He is the UC San Diego PI on an industry-sponsored multi-site study assessing Psilocybin assisted psychotherapy for treatment resistant depression. Academic interests include treatment resistant depression, suicide prevention with a special interest in physician suicide prevention, grief and bereavement, and psychiatric education.
