SESSION V: Inhibitory Learning Theory in Exposure-based Treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Exposure and response prevention (ERP) is the most effective intervention for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), with improvement rates between 60-70%. Nevertheless, some individuals do not respond well to this treatment, or experience immediate improvement, but show relapse at some point after therapy. One reason for this is that ERP has not adequately led to the extinction of obsessional fear. For example, an over-reliance on habituation during exposure therapy can lead to anxiety-reduction during exposure trials which is not the same thing as long-term fear extinction. This workshop aims to help attendees (1) understand why habituation is not necessarily sufficient for long-term fear extinction, and (2) learn strategies based on inhibitory learning models of exposure for maximizing long-term fear extinction during ERP.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After this lecture, registrants will be able to:
- Describe the inhibitory learning model of exposure therapy.
- Explain the importance of fear-tolerance over habituation.
- Identify methods of maximizing inhibitory learning during exposure therapy for obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).
SESSION IV: Disgust and Not Just Right Experiences in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
The workshop will focus on the nature of not just right experiences, also known as incompleteness, the presentation of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Additionally, the emotion disgust will be described, and illustrated for its role in the onset and maintenance of specific forms of OCD. These two facets of OCD, while under investigated, are further described for their essential role in the disorder. The workshop will conclude with strategies for addressing each of these components of OCD.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After this lecture, registrants will be able to:
- Distinguish the sense of incompleteness in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) from harm avoidance and other traditional conceptualizations of the disorder.
- Identify facets of disgust, and how these may impact symptoms of OCD.
- Use the conceptualization for incompleteness and disgust in developing methods for exposure treatment for OCD.

This activity is intended for physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, counselors, and other mental health professionals.

About these speakers
Jonathan Abramowitz, PhD is Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry, and Director of the Anxiety and Stress Disorders Clinic at the University of North Carolina. An internationally recognized expert on OCD and anxiety, he has published over 300 research articles, books, and book chapters. Jonathan is a Past President of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies and currently is Editor of the Journal of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders. He is a regular presenter at professional conferences and has received numerous awards for his contributions to the field.
Dean McKay, PhD, ABPP is Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Fordham University. He has published over 175 journal articles and book chapters, and edited or co-edited 16 books dealing with assessment and treatment of complex cases in children and adults, OCD, disgust in psychopathology, and research methodology. His research has also focused on mechanisms of information processing bias for anxiety states.
