Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental disorder with onset in the early developmental period. Although the incidence continues to rise with an incidence of 1 in 44 per the latest CDC data, barriers to diagnosis remain. The incidence of ASD is equal amongst all races, ethnicity, and socioeconomic statuses. Although better identified at the earliest age possible, ASD can be diagnosed at any age with proper evaluation techniques. As with other conditions, diagnosis leads to treatment planning. Early diagnosis allows for early intervention, which is thought to have significant impact on outcomes. Diagnosis at any age can improve functioning and quality of life. Barriers to diagnosis include lack of diagnostic services, social determinants of health, and gender bias in diagnosis.
