On Demand Grand Rounds: Between Two Pandemics: Looking Forward to Looking Back

At the end of this presentation learners will be able to understand the disparate experiences of the pandemic across the US. They will also be able to discuss how early experiences matter, and how the pandemic may be shaping the brain architecture of very young children. They will also leave with concrete recommendations about the importance of increasing identification, access, and treatment to diverse groups who have historically been marginalized and left out of systems of care.
This activity is intended for physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, counselors and other mental health professionals.
At the conclusion of this activity, attendees will be able to:
- Discuss COVID-19 and the disproportionality of transmission, infection, hospitalization, and death rates amongst Americans.
- Recognize the criticality of neurodevelopment and how parental stress secondary to COVID worries has impacted young children.
- Define the importance of early experiences.

About the speaker
Dr. Wanjikũ FM Njoroge is an Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, Associate Chair of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Program Director of the Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (CAP) Fellowship Training Program), Faculty at the PolicyLab and Medical Director of the Young Child Clinic (YCC) at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Bachelors from Columbia University, M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine. General Psychiatry Residency Training at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, and Child Psychiatry fellowship at the Yale Child Study Center. Completed further postgraduate training programs in the Harris Infant Psychiatry Fellowship, Klingenstein NIMH research fellowship and Edward Zigler Center in Child Development and Social Policy at the Yale Child Study Center, as well as a Solnit fellow at Zero to Three. Has received multiple research development awards from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and Eunice Shriver National Institute of Child and Human Development (NICHD), and University of Pennsylvania Provost Award. Her research areas of focus in health equity revolve around prevention, promotion, and early intervention in early childhood.
