Despite common public perception, athletes are not immune to mental health symptoms and disorders, and they suffer from most mental health disorders at rates equal to or exceeding those within the general population. Moreover, athletes have unique psychosocial and physiologic demands that must be understood by any mental health provider seeking to provide relevant, appropriate, and medically safe care. Mental health symptoms in athletes may be under-recognized for several reasons. It can be hard to appreciate the fine line between adaptive sport behavior and disorder. Athletes also often report fear of not being allowed to play if they reach out for help for their symptoms. Athletes are enculturated to deny signs of pain or weakness, and health care providers may tend to idealize talented athletes. This seminar will equip learners with up-to-date information on epidemiology, biopsychosocial risk factors, clinical presentation, and diagnosis of a variety of common mental health symptoms and disorders across athletes at all levels of competitiveness.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, counselors and other mental health professionals.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, attendees will be able to:
Describe the biopsychosocial stressors that contribute to mental health symptoms and disorders in athletes into formulations and treatment plans.
Identify nuanced presentations of common mental health symptoms and disorders in athletes.
Define the culture of sport and use this to establish rapport when working with athletes who are suffering from mental health symptoms and disorders.
