In this session, participants will examine the multifaceted nature of race-based trauma and its enduring impact on the psychological and physiological well-being of marginalized individuals. This workshop explores the transition from individualistic trauma-informed practice to a collective healing framework.
Mental health professionals will gain insight into the systemic roots of racial stress and learn to foster healing-centered spaces that prioritize resilience, self-care, and community support. By integrating anti-racist practices, attendees will leave with actionable strategies to support clients in navigating racialized environments while cultivating spaces for communal healing.

This activity is intended for psychologists, social workers, counselors, and other mental health professionals.

At the conclusion of this activity, attendees will be able to:
- Define race-based trauma and identify common examples of RBT
- Analyze the limitations of individualistic care and the historical necessity of collective healing in marginalized communities
- Implement anti-racist and healing-centered practices that promote resilience

About the speaker
Dr. Carmen Reese Foster serves as the MSW Program Director and Assistant Professor at Belmont University. A visionary leader in the field, she is also the Founder and Executive Director of the Coalition of Black Social Workers, a national nonprofit committed to engage, connect, and empower Black social work students and professionals. Her previous academic leadership includes roles at the University of Tennessee College of Social Work, where she served as Interim Online MSSW Program Director, Assistant Professor of Practice, and Director of Alumni Affairs.
Before transitioning into higher education, Dr. Reese Foster dedicated her practice to supporting youth and families within marginalized communities. Her scholarly research explores the intersections of race-based trauma, mental health, and community resilience. Dr. Foster’s insights have been featured in prominent outlets like The Tennessean and The Conversation, as well as peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Ethnic and Cultural Diversity in Social Work. Currently, she is co-authoring a book chapter on anti-racist praxis in higher education and serves as a national team lead for Competency 3 (Engage Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in practice) for the Service User Curriculum Guide for CSWE Accreditation Standards, which will help shape how social work programs integrate ADEI and service users in their curricula. A passionate advocate for social justice, she is a frequent speaker and educator within the community.
Dr. Reese Foster is the 2023 NASW-TN Social Worker of the Year and the 2025 Keynote Speaker for Social Work Day on the Hill in Tennessee and the National DSW Conference. She holds degrees from the University of North Carolina, the University of Maryland School of Social Work, and the University of Alabama School of Social Work.
