"Including the Caregiver in Patient-Centered Care"

Baltimore, MD US
May 9, 2018

About this Lecture:

When caring for older adults with dementia or other chronic conditions that require caregiver support, clinicians should actively assess and engage the caregiver. This lecture will review some of the limited evidence that demonstrates the link between caregiver characteristics with the medical care patients receive. After discussing the aging of the U.S. population, we will discuss how this will impact caregiving demand. The lecture will consider the importance of a caregiver assessment as part of routine clinical care and describe a structured caregiver assessment that clinicians might use to identify particular areas where education and support may be needed. In addition, some strategies clinicians might use to get a sense of the patient and caregiver’s home environment will be described. Lastly, the lecture will discuss potential policy approaches to address the needs of patients and their caregivers.

About this Presenter:

Donovan T. Maust, M.D., M.S., is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan Medical School and Research Scientist with the Center for Clinical Management Research of the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, where he sees patients on the psychiatry consult-liaison service. He has two primary lines of research informed by his work as a geriatric psychiatrist. First, he is exploring how patient, caregiver, provider, and regional characteristics influence the medical care that patients with dementia receive, with the goal of identifying patient-caregiver dyads at highest risk for potentially inappropriate care. Second, he is interested in reducing inappropriate psychotropic prescribing to older adults, with a particular focus on benzodiazepine prescribing. Dr. Maust earned his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University and completed general adult residency and a geriatric psychiatry fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania.
