Too often, our hospital units, schools, residential programs and other treatment settings hire staff members who have the correct intentions for helping and working with young people who are struggling to navigate their way through life.  Since the pandemic, the prevalence of anxiety and depression has become elevated in our youth, and those working with our children frequently face incidents that require thoughtful responses and skilled intervention.  This, however, is the problem.  Effective training to provide practical, meaningful, trauma-responsive, brain-based intervention is missing from many training and orientation programs.  Life Space Crisis Intervention fills this gap.  In this workshop, participants will gain a clear understanding of a crisis intervention tool used to help adults turn problem situations into learning opportunities for young people who exhibit challenging behaviors.  Based on the belief that young people need to feel heard and understood, along with the knowledge that relationships are the agents of change (Perry & Szalavitz, 2017), the LSCI process cultivates growth, insight and long-term change into the lives of children, adolescents, and families.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, counselors, and other mental health professionals.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this lecture, attendees will be able to:

1. Describe the 6-stage process for verbally de-escalating a young person.

2. Demonstrate an understanding of the Conflict Cycle paradigm.

3. Identify 3 strategies for breaking the Conflict Cycle.

About the speaker

Abby Potter (she/her) has been with Sheppard Pratt for thirty years, beginning as a volunteer at the Forbush School in Towson. Thirteen of the best years of her professional career were spent as a special education teacher for Sheppard Pratt Schools. After completing Life Space Crisis Intervention (LSCI) training, Abby knew this philosophy and process was vital not only for Sheppard Pratt Schools staff, but for anyone who works with children. She made it her mission to spread this skillset, along with other evidence-based frameworks such as Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS), for the better part of the last fifteen years. Abby has worked with 14 counties across Maryland, as well as private and public programs within the larger educational and mental health community, as a dynamic trainer and consultant with a passion for “keeping it real” and, above all, building relationships so we can better help young people.
