Working with children and families to promote mental health strategies is more complex in 2022 than it has ever been. Even prior to the pandemic, the proliferation of gaming, social media, and digital technology challenged adults to understand the emotional and social development of children in new ways. The pandemic has exacerbated this situation by increasing the type of amount of screen use that children engage in. This presentation will review how children are using digital media today; how it affects their mental health; differences between different age groups; and how to help parents be more effective guides to their children's screen use. Problem behaviors such as cyberbullying, "sexting," and fighting online will be reviewed. Concepts and recommendations will all be based in state-of-the-art research.
This activity is intended for physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, counselors, and other mental health professionals.
