About the speaker

Gabrielle A. Carlson, M.D., professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at State University of New York at Stony Brook since 1985, she founded and directed the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry until 2013.  Completing a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at UCLA, she taught on the faculty and joined AACAP as an early career psychiatrist.  

Dr. Carlson’s research interest has been in the phenomenology and treatment of mood disorders in children (bipolar disorder, depression, and recently mood dysregulation) and the relationship between behavior disorders, like ADHD, developmental disorders and mood disorders.  She has written over 300 papers and chapters on those subjects.  Her AACAP presidential initiative addressed impairing emotional outbursts in youth. 

Dr. Carlson has served as AACAP’s Program Chair, Counselor-at-large and ultimately, AACAP president.  She has won numerous child psychiatry awards including the APA’s Blanche F. Ittleson Award for research, Agnes Purcell McGavin Award for Prevention, and the  American Psychopathological Association’s: Zubin Award, for playing a fundamental role in psychopathology research. Two especially treasured awards have been her Virginia Q Anthony Women’s Leadership Award, and the AACAP Catchers in the Rye Humanitarian Award.
