This presentation will provide an Indigenous perspective on the concepts of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI). Within the dialogue about societal and systemic concepts, basic considerations will be provided to guide a clinician or organization’s work with Indigenous people, specifically focusing on American Indian/Alaska Native populations and communities. In order to partner effectively at the individual through community levels, professionals and organizations must engage in a manner that is critical, reflective, responsive, and humble. The first steps in the process are to develop self-awareness and assess the level of commitment to develop partnerships that are mutually beneficial, anti-oppressive, and supportive of healthy futures for Indigenous peoples.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for psychologists, social workers, counselors and other mental health professionals.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, attendees will be able to:
- Integrate an Indigenous perspective into one’s own formulation of practice concepts around Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.
- Distinguish key differences and similarities between mainstream or emerging clinical practices and Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Healing.
- Redesign one’s own conceptualizations of cultural competence, cultural responsiveness, cultural relevance and cultural humility as applied from an Indigenous framework.

About the speaker
Christopher Sharp, M.S.W, M.P.A, is a Clinical Assistant Professor and the Director of Office of American Indian Projects, within the School of Social Work at the Arizona State University. He is of the Mohave tribe, descendant of the Frog Clan (Bouh'th) and a citizen of the Colorado River Indian Tribes. He teaches courses as a professor, serves as a field liaison to students in Tribal and urban American Indian-serving field placement settings, and is the advisor for the American Indian Social Work Student Association. He earned his B.S. in American Indian Studies, Master of Social Work, and Master of Public Administration at ASU. Chris serves on the National Advisory Committee for the FRIENDS CB-CAP technical assistance center, the Governing Council of the Indigenous and Tribal Social Work Educators Association, as Secretary of the Native American Connections Board of Directors, and is a member of the Council on Social Work Education and National Indian Child Welfare Association.
