The views and opinions expressed by this presenter in this lecture are their own, and do not represent the views of Sheppard Pratt.

In the past two years, practitioners have become acutely aware of disparities based on social identity and race.  In particular that many individuals suffer from historical and racial trauma.  Psychologists, Social Workers and Counselors are ethically bound to practice with cultural competence and yet, do not learn specific skills to engage their clients around difference or to heal the wounds of racial trauma   Instead, practitioners and their clients remain in the “safe zone” out of fear of offending or causing further harm which becomes an unfulfilling experience.   This workshop will help participants to bridge the gap between cultural awareness and applying skills to engage in discussions related to living with marginalized identities.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for psychologists, social workers, counselors, and other mental health professionals.

Learning Objectives

After this lecture, registrants will be able to:

  1. Describe the relationship between systemic oppression and racial trauma.
  2. Utilize mindful reflections to validate communications.
  3. Practice mindful listening and inquiry skills to engage in dialogues related to difference.
