Live Professional Workshop Series: When Objects are More than Things: An overview of diagnosing and treating Hoarding Disorder

Hoarding disorder (HD) is a severe psychiatric condition marked by extreme saving behaviors, collecting tendencies, and levels of clutter that impair daily functioning and can present health and safety risks. Until relatively recently HD was under-recognized, poorly understood, and thought to be rare. It is now understood that HD is a common and complex clinical phenomenon, often marked by high rates of physical and psychiatric comorbidity and lack of insight. Although efficacious treatments have been developed, it remains challenging to reduce hoarding behaviors.
Attendees will gain knowledge of HD and its treatment from multiple perspectives. First and foremost, attendees will be introduced to the essential concepts necessary for diagnosing the disorder, including an overview of the cognitive behavioral conceptualization of hoarding. Next, an overview of the best practices for treating adults with HD will be provided, along with a discussion of common treatment challenges. Attendees will be introduced to core therapeutic techniques, along with the general structure and format of sessions. Finally, attendees will be introduced to alternative, community-focused interventions.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for psychologists, social workers, counselors, and other mental health professionals.
Learning Objectives
After this lecture, registrants will be able to:
- Recognize and accurately define hoarding disorder.
- Describe the cognitive behavioral conceptualization of hoarding disorder.
- Identify the psychotherapeutic and psychiatric best-practices for the treatment of hoarding disorder.

About The Speaker
Kiara Timpano is a Professor at the University of Miami, the director of the Adult Division in the Department of Psychology, and the director of the Program for Anxiety, Stress, and OCD (PASO). She received her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Florida State University in 2009 and completed her clinical internship and post-doc at the Massachusetts General Hospital OCD and Related Disorders Program. Her research interests are in understanding risk and vulnerability factors that play a role in the etiology, comorbidity, and maintenance of anxiety and obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders, with a particular focus on hoarding disorder. Her work on hoarding helped establish the condition as a discrete syndrome within DSM-5, and reflects key contributions to our understanding of the etiology and treatment of this understudied and severe condition. Dr. Timpano is a member of the Scientific and Clinical Advisory Board of the International OCD Foundation, and a co-leader of the Hoarding Track. She has received multiple grants from the National Institute of Mental Health to further investigate hoarding disorder, and has published and presented widely in the areas of CBT for anxiety disorders, OCD and hoarding.
