For the trainee, a tragically underappreciated aspect in psychodynamic psychotherapeutic relationships, and arguably psychotherapeutic relationships of all kinds in all settings, is the termination and what ensues thereafter. The so-called ‘post-termination phase’ is very much an evolving, alive aspect to the therapist, whether or not to label it in the countertransferential sphere or not, deserves attention. The idea that countertransference holds its utility in the service of the treatment seems to fall short of such significance when the physical meetings of the therapy have since ceased after termination. In this regard, the presentation will bring forward the topic and importance of understanding grief and loss on the part of the therapist after the therapeutic relationship has come to its close. By considering the magnitude in which post-termination countertransference may continue, it may provide further evidence on how closely attuned one can be when explorations occur during the therapy itself. Lastly, the topic of termination and post-termination is an area that appears on the fringe of didactic content within residency training, and may represent an area in need of further attention on the part of clinician educators as well.

- Illustrate how teletherapy can be leveraged to bypass obstacles towards transference development.
- Demonstrate how transitioning from virtual to in-person meetings can be wrought with psychodynamic implications.
- Explain how countertransference is an evolving process that exists, in an altered way, after termination.

About the speaker
Eric is finishing up his Psychiatry Residency at University of Maryland and Sheppard Pratt, as part of the Physician Scientist Training Program. His research interests are focused on understanding the cerebrovascular implications in psychopathology, particularly as it relates to the blood-brain barrier and neurovascular unit. Clinically, he has devoted his time to gaining expertise in cutting edge psychiatric interventions, including neuromodulatory techniques, psychedelic-assisted therapy, and transference focused psychotherapy. He also shares a passion for psychodynamics and psychoanalysis and hopes to bridge these diverse interests as he progresses along his career with skills gained throughout his residency training.
Born in New York and raised in New Jersey, where most of his family still resides, Eric will be returning to that area after finishing residency, with his wife and their two-year-old son and six-month-old daughter. He will be starting his new role at Weill Cornell Medicine, as an Assistant Professor in Psychiatry. Eric enjoys soccer, having fulfilled a successful career playing in college and semi-professionally in Argentina during his youth. His goals are to bring an understanding to non-neuronal mechanisms of psychopathology and underpinnings of psychotherapy by shedding light onto cerebrovascular and glial mediated influences on neuronal functioning and downstream behavior. His other goal is to coach his children’s soccer teams and run a half marathon pushing his daughter in her stroller, as he did with his son on his first birthday.
