Motivational interviewing is an approach developed out of Carl Roger’s person-centered model and established by Miller and Rollnick in 1983. This therapeutic approach can assist individuals experiencing gambling related harms recognize their ambivalent feelings and find the internal motivations needed to change their behavior. This training will explore the use motivational interviewing techniques for persons with Gambling Disorder as well as harm reduction strategies.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for psychologists, social workers, counselors, and other mental health professionals. 

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, attendees will be able to:

  1. Implement Motivational Interviewing techniques with those with an identified Gambling Disorder.
  2. Define limited gambling and the role harm reduction plays in gambling treatment.
  3. Integrate the Stages of Change and tips for goal setting to reduce gambling related harms.

About the speakers

Kristen Beall is the Clinical Manager with the Maryland Center of Excellence on Problem Gambling, Kristen provides consultation and technical assistance to organizations and private practitioners integrating Problem Gambling screening and assessment into their current treatment paradigms. With 19 years of experience in behavioral health counseling, Kristen works closely with the Center’s Certified Peer Recovery Specialists and helpline staff connecting help seekers to problem gambling resources.  Kristen is dedicated to assisting helping professionals throughout Maryland understand the importance of asking questions about gambling and incorporate these conversations into their clinical practice.

Deborah Perry is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LCPC), Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor Supervisor, and Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Approved Supervisor in the state of Maryland. She holds a national certification as a Master Addictions Counselor. With 20 + years of mental and behavioral health experience her goal is to help a variety of vulnerable populations take back their lives through a collaborative therapeutic relationship where clients are able to identify thoughts, feelings and behavior that will attract desired results. 

Deborah enjoys working with individuals ages 25 to Seniors. Deborah’s eclectic counseling style draws mostly from Person Centered Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, Reality Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Existentialism and Motivational Interviewing. Deborah believes clients can chose to change, modify or eliminate that which stifles their personal and emotional growth and experience a deeply inspired and productive lifestyle. Her professional strengths include couples counseling, addiction issues, anxiety, stress management, anger management, LGBT+, self-care/wellness and women’s issues.
