The COVID pandemic has led to an increase in psychological distress for the overall population which may be even greater for persons with pre-existing mental health problems and those seeking mental health care.  This presentation will describe the psychological symptoms that may occur in response to a disaster and that patients may experience in response to the COVID pandemic.  Strategies for brief interventions in response to a disaster will also be discussed as well as a framework for triaging patients for more extended mental health treatment.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for psychologists, social workers, counselors, and other mental health professionals.

Learning Objectives

1.  Identify common acute psychological symptoms in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
2.  Define a framework for triaging persons for further mental health treatment in response to a disaster.
3.  Describe strategies that may be applied in brief interventions for persons affected by a disaster such as the current pandemic.

About this speaker:

Dr. Victor Welzant is the director of the postdoctoral psychology fellowship and coordinator of psychology for the Trauma Disorders Program at Sheppard Pratt. He is the former Director of the Psychotherapy Training Program of the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation and served on that organization’s Board of Directors. Victor is also the Director of Education and Training for the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides training in crisis support and resilience for emergency services personnel and health care workers. He has lectured and consulted nationally and internationally on trauma treatment, crisis intervention and disaster mental health.
