Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common neuropsychiatric disorder that frequently manifest symptoms into adulthood. While it is important to determine if psychiatric symptoms may better explain the observed ADHD symptoms, other psychiatric disorders may coexist. Substance Use Disorders (SUDs), are particularly common among adults with ADHD and often complicate treatment. While early studies suggest that pharmacologic treatments targeting ADHD symptoms combined with psychotherapeutic approaches have modest effects on ADHD and ineffective in treating the SUD, more recent studies and secondary analyses suggest that there are promising approaches which will be discussed. Several clinical concerns arise in using stimulants to treat ADHD and SUD population; but these can be clinical managed and do not preclude the use of them when administered in a judicious fashion. Strategies of implementing pharmacotherapies and psychotherapeutic approaches will be presented.
