Wednesday Lecture Series: Human Trafficking and Mental Illness: A Study of Survivors in Texas

Survivors of human trafficking are presenting to healthcare settings with a wide range of physical and mental illness as a consequence of the repeated abuses and complex trauma suffered throughout their captivity. Providers unaware of potential indicators that could identify a patient as a victim of human trafficking often do not recognize these patients as being trafficked, creating increased risk for re-traumatization and missed opportunities to provide critical resources to assist them in their recovery.
This presentation will provide a review of the epidemiology of human trafficking, identify risk factors and potential indicators of human trafficking observed in healthcare settings, and describe the importance of trauma-informed, survivor-centered approaches when responding to survivors. Novel data collected from a 6 year multi-disciplinary initiative providing a safe exit strategy for victims working truck stops along a Texas transportation corridor will demonstrate the distribution of mental health disorders and prepare providers to identify needed resources and coordination of services.
At the end of the presentation, participants will be equipped with tools to help them identify and engage survivors of trafficking in their healthcare practice, recognize common mental illnesses present among survivors, and justify the need for interdisciplinary collaborations and multi-sector partnerships to build capacity supporting the long term needs and recovery of survivors.

At the conclusion of this activity, attendees will be able to:

- Apply trauma-informed and survivor-centered approaches to engage and care for survivors.
- Compare the prevalence of complex mental illnesses observed among a sample of survivors using self-report data and clinical diagnosis data.

About this speaker
Dr. Felini is an epidemiologist with over fifteen years of experience in health disparities. Supported with funding from NIH, HRSA, and the Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas, this work has focused on understanding the complex intersections of environment, genetic, and social determinants of health disparities among vulnerable and marginalized populations.
