Wednesday Lecture Series: Keys to Maximizing the Effects of Exposure and Response Prevention for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Batimore, MD US
February 5, 2020

Exposure and response prevention (ERP) is clearly the treatment of choice for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD; Foa & McLean, 2016).  However, mere exposure to a feared stimulus does not guarantee anxiety will be reduced.  Tactical miscues in the delivery of ERP oftentimes leaves clients with less than optimal results.  This presentation will focus on three keys to maximizing response to exposure therapy with OCD clients: prolonged; repetitive; and graduated exposure.  The role of habituation will be discussed as well as exposure concepts related to inhibitory learning theory (Craske, Treanor, Conway, Zbozinek, & Vervliet, 2014).
