Wednesday Lecture Series: Prepare to Launch: Transition from Pediatric to Adult Care for Youth with Neuropsychiatric Disorders
This presentation will be broadcast live online on January 13, 2020 from 12:00 noon - 1:00 PM. Go to the Register tab above to learn how to participate for continuing education credit, watch the broadcast and download the slides.
It is natural for children and youth to grow into adulthood; it is hard for all, but those with special needs have extra challenges that make the process even more difficult. It takes years to develop disease knowledge, skills to manage daily medications as well as emergencies, ability to avoid self-endangering choices, and maturity to take full ownership of their condition. Pediatricians and specialists have only recently begun to study this critical period to ensure optimal success. Pediatric neurologists have outlined principles of transition that will serve child and adolescent psychiatrists in their efforts to improve transition for patients with emotional and behavioral disorders. This presentation will review progress in neurologic transition including barriers and potential solutions that emphasize collaboration with patients, family and others in addition to efforts to utilize the electronic medical record in practical ways.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, counselors, therapists and other mental health professionals.
Learning Objectives
After this lecture you will be able to:
1. Distinguish the difference between transition and transfer.
2. Recognize barriers to transition and develop successful solutions.
3. Discuss how superimposition of intellectual disability adds a significant layer of complication to the goals of transition.
Sheppard Pratt is dedicated to improving quality of life through mental health, special education, and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults and older adults. Our patient-centered treatment approach, combined with our legacy of clinical excellence, sets us apart from other health systems on both a local and national level. We have been ranked among the nation’s top psychiatric hospitals for 24 consecutive years by U. S. News & World Report. Founded in 1853 by philanthropist Moses Sheppard, Sheppard Pratt Health System still abides by its Quaker traditions and values.
Sheppard Pratt regularly hosts renowned speakers from across the country at our headquarters in Towson. We provide educational opportunities on subjects including psychiatric disorders, issues of behavioral health, systems-based change, mental and somatic co-morbidities, psychiatric effects on health and health outcomes, advances in neurobiology, and clinical developments in concepts underlying drug treatment of psychiatric disorders. We are accredited by the Accreditation Council of Continuing Medical Education, the Maryland Nurses’ Association, the Maryland Board of Psychology, the Maryland Board of Social Work, and the National Board of Certified Counselors.
