Clinicians and researchers often confront ethical dilemmas that they must resolve in a manner consistent with the ethical standards and guidelines of their profession. Many ethicists have noted the importance of having ethical frameworks for making ethical decisions.  In this workshop learners will examine and apply two ethical frameworks:  Feminist Ethics as defined by Brabeck (2002) and Rest’s Four component model of practicing ethics, particularly ethical sensitivity. Particular attention will be paid to making culturally informed ethical decisions.

 

Target Audience

This activity is intended for psychologists, social workers, counselors and other mental health professionals. 

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, attendees will be able to:

  • Explain Rest’s Four-Component Theory
  • Identify the contributions of feminist theory to ethics.
  • Apply ethical language in the Racial Ethical Sensitivity Test (REST)

About the speaker

Mary M. Brabeck, PhD, is Professor Emerita of Applied Psychology and Dean Emerita of the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at New York University.  She served as dean of the NYU Steinhardt School from 2003-2014 and as dean of the Carolyn and Peter Lynch School of Education at Boston College from 1996-2003. She has published over 100 scholarly papers and book chapters on intellectual and ethical development, professional and feminist ethics, gender differences in cognition and morality and interprofessional collaboration to enhance K-12 student achievement. Dr. Brabeck was Editor-in-Chief of the Psychology of Women Quarterly, (2005-20019). She is a fellow of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and a fellow of American Psychological Association (APA), Divisions 7 (Developmental), 17 (Counseling Psychology), 35 (Psychology of Women), and 52 (International Psychology).

Dr. Brabeck was an elected member, vice chair (2021-22), and chair (2022-2023) of the APA Ethics Committee.  From 2004–2005, she was elected chair of the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education. From 2005–2007 she was an elected member of the Board of Directors of the APA Education Directorate and was elected to APA’s Commission for the Recognition of Specialties and Proficiencies in Professional Psychology (CRSPPP). Dr. Brabeck's awards and recognitions include a Doctor of Humane Letters from St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia; Outstanding Achievement Award from the University of Minnesota; Alumni Award from the University of Minnesota School of Education and Human Development; APA Presidential Citation; the Kuhmerker Award from the Association for Moral Education; Distinguished Alumni Award from St. Cloud University. She was a member of the National Teacher Corps (1967-1970) at Bryant Junior High School, Mpls. MN, and received her PhD in educational psychology from the University of Minnesota in 1980.
