Over the past decade there has been significant progress in identifying and treating pathological narcissism and narcissistic personality disorder, NPD. This presentation aims at discussing strategies for recognizing and diagnosing NPD, understanding the individual struggling with this personality disorder, and outlining advances in treatment interventions and modalities. Specific attention will be given to the range and dimensions of narcissistic personality functioning, and the process of change.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for psychologists, social workers, counselors and other mental health professionals.

At the conclusion of this activity, attendees will be able to:

  1. Identify three dimensions of psychopathology in diagnosing narcissistic personality disorder
  2. Distinguish three developmental origins for narcissistic personality disorder

About the speaker

Elsa Ronningstam, Ph.D is an Associate Clinical Professor at Harvard Medical School and a psychologist at McLean Hospital affiliated to the Gunderson Outpatient Program specialized in treatment of personality disorders. She is a psychoanalyst and a member of the Faculty of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, BPSI and teaches in the Advanced Training Program in Psychotherapy and in the Exploration in Mind Program. She is also a longstanding member of the Boston Suicide Study Group which focuses on the psychodynamic understanding and treatment of suicidality.  Over the past 35 years she has specialized on studies and treatment of pathological narcissism and narcissistic personality  and she has  over 100 publications.
