Perinatal psychiatric disorders are common, with a 12-month prevalence rate of approximately 25%. The pandemic affected different communities and age groups across the U.S. in distinct and varied ways. It is vital that healthcare workers understand these disparate experiences and work to address inequities. This presentation will provide concrete recommendations on ways to increase identification, access, and treatment of diverse groups who have been historically marginalized and left out of established systems of care. We will also learn why early experiences are so important for very young children and how the pandemic may be affecting their development and shaping their brain architecture. Join Wanjikũ FM Njoroge, MD, as she discusses COVID-19, the disproportionality of its transmission, and its effect on the early experiences and neurodevelopment of children.
The shortage of psychiatric beds has made it more difficult for patients to access inpatient care while in a mental health crisis. Even so, hospitalization may not always be the best setting to address the patient’s needs. Invasive Home Treatment can be an alternative to in-patient hospital treatment and preferred to patients seeking intensive in-home private care. Join David S. Heath, MB, ChB, FRCPC, as he discusses the research and evolution behind Intensive Home Treatment and how it fits into a mental health system.

Life Space Crisis Intervention fills this gap. Participants in this workshop will learn about crisis intervention tools that adults can employ to turn problem situations into learning opportunities for struggling young people. Join Abby L. Potter, M.Ed, as she discusses Life Space Crisis Intervention and the Conflict Cycle paradigm.
